Solomons Island & Vicinity: An Illustrated History and Walking Tour compiled by Richard J. Dodds (Paperback)
In recent years, Solomons Island and the surrounding area have become a mecca for visiting yachtsmen, tourists, and new residents, attracted by water, recreational amenities, and the rolling countryside dotted with tobacco barns and corn fields. The growth in the region has brought increased pressure for development which is changing both the physical landscape and traditional economic and social patterns. Over the years, the Calvert Marine Museum has tried to preserve and record this heritage through exhibits and publications. For the tens of thousands of visitors who come to Solomons and the museum each year, there has been a need for a booklet to serve as a guide to the area. It is hoped that this publication will fill that void and help document and encourage further interest in a unique part of historic Calvert County in Southern Maryland. In this presentation, which is very much a walk through history, the Museum highlights a little of what Solomons used to be: the churches, businesses, schools, homes, and people that formed the heart of the community. For clarity, the book has been divided into three sections: Solomons Island proper; Avondale/Johnstown; and the surrounding area. It is not intended to be all-inclusive, and represents the best information available at the time.
